specializing in three key areas
of peak performance
The difference between elite athletes and those who struggle with confidence, focus, discipline, and consistency is in your mentality.
Now If you find that you’re struggling in these areas, it’s ok. It’s NORMAL. Every professional and high-level D1 athlete I have discussions with understands that the mental game needs to be trained just as much as footwork, strength, and sport IQ. From where you are today, we will aim to turn your struggles into strengths—and those strengths into the mental edge that improves your game to the next level.

individual therapy sessions
Here therapy is built specifically for you and your sport. Together, we’ll look at how your life, upbringing, and environment (teammates, coaches, family, culture) have shaped the mindset you compete with today. Together, we’ll identify the strengths that fuel your success and rewire the mental patterns that are holding you back using expertise and deep scientific research.

My philosophy starts with self-mattering and then combines Social Work, sports based psychological principles, and evidence-based techniques: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Solution-Focused Therapy.

Our work together will aim to improve your mental game, overall performance, and give you that competitive edge.

about me

charles armstrong-hicks, LICSW
I’m Charles, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with a decade of experience in mental health and background as a collegiate athlete. I now channel all of that knowledge into helping athletes gain a mental advantage through science-backed strategies.
What drives athletic greatness is your belief that real performance isn’t just about confidence, focus, or discipline on the surface—it’s about the foundation beneath them. That foundation is self-mattering—the belief that you matter to yourself, can rely on yourself, and see your own worth, regardless of outcomes.

When athletes begin to understand their own worth—not just as competitors, but as people—their ability to perform under pressure transforms.

It's an interconnected view of mental performance. Confidence, focus, and discipline are the core pillars we’ll strengthen—but surrounding them are research-backed insights on things like anger, quitting and goal abandonment, happiness, procrastination, grit, passion, time management, and visualization. Each one influences how you show up when it matters. We’ll use that knowledge to our advantage.

This work is never one-size-fits-all. Together, we’ll explore the systems and experiences that have shaped your mindset and apply the right strategies for your sport, your goals, and the way you think and move. It’s by integrating research from sports psychology, social work, and proven therapy techniques that I help athletes develop the confidence, focus, and discipline needed to compete at the highest level.
